REFLECTIVE: My whakapapa from Parihaka, Taranaki Iwi and Te Atiawa, are very aware of the risks of opposing regimes with humility and truth. The large Guillotine artwork responds/talks/provokes discussions about human relationships and the human condition.
The work references New Zealand’s social and cultural divergence amongst its many ethnic communities. What is most disturbing is that it discusses our own propensity for oppressive actions. It critiques the lack of wisdom of local and national leaders to reinforce the universality of the human condition.
