TITLE: I LAND
ARTIST: Emily Hill
MATERIALS: Enamel house paint on Tarpaulin
DIMENSIONS: 6020 x 2870 mm
TEXT: Genesis 1.1,3
In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth.
And God said, “Let there be
light”, and there was light.
Make her praises heard afar
God defend our free land
God defend Aotearoa
God defend our divided land
Covenant
Guard Pacific’s triple star
Revelation 21.5
He who was seated on the
throne said, “I am making all
things new!” Then he said,
“Write this down, for these
words are trustworthy and true.”

REFLECTIVE: The I Land work, patterned in a typical Colin McCahon style, proclaims legislative betrayal involving land since the signing of Te Tiriti O Waitangi. However, this work is not a static refl ection rather a plea for justice. I LAND is the predominant statement of this work but the epic storyline of I AM is the background and bookend to our history through the fi rst words of Genesis’s fi rst words and the fi nal curtain call of Revelation. I AM has been ever present during our history and knows the end from the beginning. The covenant of Christ’s blood is the hope for our treaty and the hope for our divided land. God will judge justly – this is our Hope.
